Welcome Back Blog

GMS Families,

Welcome Back to the 2021-2022 school year. Yesterday our teachers returned and are getting eager and ready for the students to return on Monday. If you are a Kindergarten family or new family you are invited to our Meet the Teacher event this Friday from 1:30 - 2:30. You will have an opportunity to get a tour of the building and meet your teacher and see your classroom. In order to control crowds we have divided the time for Meet the Teacher and tours alphabetically. Families with last names A-K will tour the building from 1:30 - 2:00 and then Meet the Teacher from 2:00 - 2:30, while families with last names L-Z will Meet the Teacher from 1:30 - 2:00 and then have tours from 2:00 - 2:30. We will also have school buses on site for students to go on and explore so they are familiar with the vehicle prior to the first day. We cannot wait to meet you all!

At last week's board meeting, the board approved a reopening plan that included a decision making matrix for masking, it factors in community spread and school impact. The matrix is then broken down into three categories: personal/family preference, Targeted (which calls for masks in PreK-5), and Required (Masking in all buildings).

Because of this matrix we expect the masking expectations to change rather frequently. Based on today's information we would be in the Targeted range which would call for masking in PreK-5. Further, there still currently exists a federal mask mandate for all mass transportation which includes School buses, so masks must be worn on buses.  This could change before Monday and will most likely change throughout the school year. It is important that you are aware of these categories as they will be communicated via email and text. For instance, you may receive a text message that states: “GMS will now be Personal Choice & Responsibility for masks”. We are committed to communicating this information in as timely and simple a manner as possible to ease the burden and confusion families may experience. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the documents that were linked above. Further the district has created an FAQ sheet which hopefully will create further clarity with issues regarding COVID and this school year.

While we look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday, we also want to welcome the new staff who have joined our GMS family this summer:

Adrienne Vail- Naylor - Nurse

Courntey Magoon - Music

Hailey Legasse - Case Manager

Cheryl Minervini - Grade 4 Teacher

Karen Desjadon- Digital Learning Specialist (District)

Finally, I have sent this initial email out in the form of the blog that you will receive weekly. This blog will arrive via email and text each Friday at 5:00 pm. Please note how the blog is organized and sectioned. The first part is a narrative where we will highlight events of the week and important information. Absence Reporting Email

The GMS office now has a dedicated email address to use to report your child tardy or absent:  GMSabsences@litchfieldsd.org. You can also find it on the Griffin Memorial School homepage, on the top, left side under “ABSENCES”.

When you send an email please include the following information:

                *Child’s first and last name

                *Teacher

                *Reason for absence

If you would prefer to leave a voicemail message when your child is absent or tardy you are still welcome to call 424-5931 and then hit “6” when you hear the automated message. Please remember to include the above information in the voice message.

Please note that when you email or leave a voice message saying that your child “will be out” then the absence is recorded as unexcused. Please tell us the reason for the absence so it is documented correctly.
